The Skin School Rules: A Simple Guide for Tweens, Teens (and the Moms Who Love Them)
A Healthy-Skin Guide for Tweens + Teens
Back to school means new notebooks, new schedules, sports, activities, sleepovers—and maybe a little more independence. It’s also a great time to learn a few simple habits for taking care of your skin.

You’ve probably seen it on TikTok or Instagram: girls as young as seven or eight walking through elaborate, multi-step skincare routines. Some young girls are averaging six products a day, and some layering more than a dozen, with the most-viewed videos containing an average of eleven active ingredients too harsh for young, still-developing skin. That’s a look at what’s popular online, not a survey of typical routines, so it doesn’t mean most kids are doing this. But dermatologists are seeing more tweens with irritation from products never meant for their skin, and there’s a second concern worth naming: many mainstream products contain parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance compounds—recognized endocrine disruptors that peer-reviewed research has studied specifically in adolescent girls. Young, developing bodies are exactly the ones worth being thoughtful about protecting.
At Dr. Alkaitis Organics, we don’t believe young skin needs a complicated routine. Keep it simple. Keep it gentle. Start learning what your skin likes and needs.
We also don’t think tweens and teens should be discouraged from taking an interest in their skin—curiosity about self-care is healthy at any age. The problem was never that young people want to care for their skin; it’s what they’re being sold to do it with. That’s exactly what our formulating philosophy solves. Since 1996, every Dr. Alkaitis product has followed one rule set by our founder, Dr. Saulius Alkaitis: “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.”™ Certified organic, biodynamic, raw, and hand-made in small batches in our California lab—no parabens, no phthalates, no synthetic fragrance. That makes our line genuinely appropriate for younger skin, used simply and gently.
Taking care of your skin isn’t about looking older or chasing a trend. It’s about hygiene, healthy habits, and learning to take care of yourself—lessons you can start at almost any age.
Stella’s Summer at Camp
This summer, eight-year-old Stella packed the Dr. Alkaitis Organic Travel Kit Deluxe for camp. Between swim practice, sports, and long days outside, her skin needed real help—not a routine to maintain, just a couple of products that actually did something.

Her favorites were the Organic Soothing Gel and the Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil. When a spider bite left her with an itchy, annoying welt, the Soothing Gel was the first thing she reached for. And after swimming and sports left her skin dry, the Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil became part of her morning and night routine—hydrating, calming, and simple enough that an eight-year-old could manage it herself.
Here’s Stella, in her own words:
“My favorite products were the treatment oil and the soothing gel. I had a spider bite and I put the soothing gel on it because it was itchy and annoying, and the treatment oil was hydrating and calming and nice to put on in the morning and at night when my skin was dry after swimming and sports.”
That’s the whole philosophy in a sentence from an eight-year-old: use what your skin actually needs, when it needs it. No ten steps required.
Skin School: Start With the Basics
Before serums, trends, and complicated routines, there are a few basics that matter most.
Wash Your Face
Start and finish the day with clean skin.
Gently cleanse your face in the morning and before bed, especially after a day of school, sports, sunscreen, makeup, or outdoor activities.
The Organic Purifying Facial Cleanser is gentle enough for this twice-a-day habit because it’s built on saponified plant oils rather than harsh detergents, with a Skin Repair Complex of chamomile, calendula, and marsh mallow root worked in to calm skin while it cleanses—so it washes away the day without stripping the moisture young skin needs.
Then follow with Organic Herbal Toner OR Organic Soothing Gel, depending on what feels best on your skin.
Morning: Cleanse → Herbal Toner OR Soothing Gel → Organic "Love Your Lips" Lip Balm → Sunscreen
Evening: Cleanse → Herbal Toner OR Soothing Gel → Organic "Love Your Lips" Lip Balm
That’s enough.
You don’t need ten products. You don’t need to use everything every day.
The goal is to start paying attention to your skin and learn what makes it feel healthy and comfortable.

A Few Tricks From Paisley Pahlmann, Our Dr. Alkaitis Brand Educator
1: Keep Soothing Gel Close
Our Organic Soothing Gel is one of those wonderfully versatile products that’s especially nice for active kids and teens. It’s why it’s so good for irritated, reactive skin:
- An aloe vera base does the initial cooling and hydrating
- Chamomile and elderflower calm redness
- Boswellia, a precious resin used for centuries for its calming properties, rounds it out as the star of the formula.
- Witch hazel adds a light, natural astringency, which is part of why it feels so refreshing on a hot, sweaty day.
Use it as your everyday lightweight hydrator, or dab a little onto individual spots when skin needs extra attention:
- After sports
- After outdoor adventures
- On bug bites and minor scrapes
- Whenever skin simply feels irritated
Apply a little Soothing Gel wherever your skin could use some comforting care. Just ask Stella—it’s exactly what she reached for after her spider bite at camp.

2: Been Outside All Day?
First rule: protect your skin from the sun.
Wear sunscreen, seek shade when you can, and remember that sun protection isn’t just for the beach.
After a long day outdoors, gently pat or press Organic Herbal Toner into your skin for a cooling, refreshing feel. This one leans on nettle, chamomile, and elderflower to calm and de-puff, witch hazel for a light, natural tightening effect, and a mineral-rich seaweed, bladderwrack, that helps skin hold onto moisture and stay elastic after a day in the sun and wind.
Follow with Soothing Gel when desired.

3: Feeling Dry?
Here’s one of our favorite little Dr. Alkaitis tricks:
Put some Herbal Toner into the palm of your hand and add a drop of Nourishing Treatment Oil. Mix them together and gently press this refreshing, hydrating serum into your skin.

The Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil is built on jojoba and rosehip oils, both wonderfully light and fast-absorbing, so this combination never feels heavy, even on skin that gets sweaty from sports.
Simple.
Give Stressed Skin a Reset
Our Organic Universal Mask makes a wonderful occasional ritual when skin looks or feels stressed and needs some calming care.
Make it a Sunday-night ritual before the school week begins, or something fun to do together with Mom.

Your Phone Might Need a Skincare Routine, Too
Here’s something you may not think about: What touches your face matters.
Think about how many places your phone goes during the day—and then how often you hold it against your face. The same goes for earbuds, headphones, hands, and fingernails.
Try adding these habits to your routine:
- Wipe down your phone regularly
- Clean earbuds and headphones
- Use a nail brush to keep underneath your fingernails clean
- Wash your hands before touching your face
- Keep face towels and pillowcases clean
- Don’t share face towels
- After sports or sweating, shower and cleanse your face when you can
- Keep bangs and hair that touch your face clean
- Try not to pick at spots
These may not sound like skincare, but they’re part of taking care of your skin, too.
Become an Ingredient Detective
This might be one of the most important beauty habits you ever learn: turn the bottle around.

Makeup and skincare can be fun. But before choosing something because it’s trending, a friend loves it, or you’ve seen it all over social media, look at what’s actually inside it.
Read the ingredient list. Don’t recognize something? Look it up. Ask questions. Learn what it does.
A useful resource to explore with a parent is the EWG Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database, where you can look up many personal-care products and individual cosmetic ingredients.
Then start asking questions:
• What’s in this?
• Why is it in the formula?
• Is this product appropriate for my skin and my age?
• Do I actually need it?
Learning to read an ingredient label is a skill you can use for the rest of your life.
Ingredient Detective Challenge: The next time you pick up a lip gloss, cleanser, moisturizer, shampoo, or makeup product, turn it around before you buy it. See how many ingredients you recognize. Then investigate the ones you don’t.
The coolest beauty trend might just be knowing what you’re using.
Makeup Is Fun. Good Habits Make It Better.
If you’re beginning to experiment with makeup, have fun with it, but learn good habits from the beginning.
Keep your brushes and applicators clean. Don’t share makeup, brushes, or applicators with friends. And however tired you are at the end of the night: wash your face and take your makeup off before bed.
Your skin deserves a clean start in the morning.
Why Are We So Particular About Ingredients?
Because we’ve been thinking about them for more than thirty years.
Our founder, Dr. Saulius Alkaitis, was a chemist who became a pioneer in the organic skincare world back in the early 1990s, when he first grew concerned about the potentially harmful ingredients in the products his wife and daughter were using. He used his research and knowledge of plants to formulate a skincare line built on one non-negotiable rule, and introduced the first products in 1996.
- Our products are made in our own California laboratory in small batches, with extraordinary attention to the freshness and quality of our ingredients.
- We formulate with organic and biodynamic botanicals and a whole-plant approach to skincare—using the entire root, stem, leaf, and flower rather than isolated extracts.
- Everything is raw: we never heat our ingredients or products above body temperature, which keeps them full of enzymatic activity and full therapeutic benefit for skin.
And long before reading beauty labels became a trend, Dr. Alkaitis had a very simple philosophy:
“If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.”™
It’s a memorable way of reminding us to pay attention to what we put on our bodies.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ and its remarkable protective barrier to the outside world. It deserves thoughtful care. And thoughtful doesn’t have to mean complicated.
A Grown-Up’s Perspective: Meet Gabriella
Gabriella Monteiro has been using Dr. Alkaitis products for over a decade—longer than she can really remember not using them, since her mother kept the whole line in their bathroom in Miami. She’s 23 now, living in Paris, where she earned her degree at Parsons Paris. She models and is starting culinary school this year.

As a tween and teen, Gaby’s routine was never complicated:
- The Organic Purifying Facial Cleanser
- The Organic Herbal Toner
- The Organic Soothing Gel
- And the Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil
She kept travel sizes of each in her school bag, using them after sports, after swimming, or just to freshen up with friends. It wasn’t until much later that she added the Day Crème and Eye Crème to the mix.
Her biggest skin challenge is dryness, and that same core routine—now with the crèmes layered in—still keeps her skin glowing and comfortable today. She’s learned that a simple, consistent routine does more for her skin than a complicated one ever could, and it shows: makeup artists on set regularly comment on how naturally her skin glows before they’ve even started.
“I grew up with these products in my bathroom, and I never needed anything more complicated than a cleanser, a toner, and the treatment oil to keep my skin healthy through braces, sports, swim team, all of it. Now I show up to shoots with skin that just glows on its own, and the makeup artists always ask what I use. It’s still the same four products I started with as a kid.”
