We all know our bodies respond to stress. Some of us lose sleep, others get headaches, and all of us will agree when I say that stress does not make us prettier. When we’re stressed, we often experience redness in our skin and those who suffer from acne, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema or perioral dermatitis will see these conditions worsen.
Research has shown that when stress occurs, the production of glucocorticoid, the stress hormone, increases. That is a real problem, as this hormone disrupts the skin’s barrier function but also prevents other hormones from successfully fulfilling their task of protecting the skin against attacks from bacteria. A lose/lose situation, as this makes the skin vulnerable to irritation. Also, stress causes cell renewal to slow down and decreases secretion of the skin’s ceramides and natural moisturizing factors, leaving skin dry, flakey and dull.
On top of it all, stress can cause you to age prematurely. Chronic stress increases the amount of free radicals in the body which speeds up demolition of our genetic material. This causes our cells to stop renewing, which results in the aging of our bodies. Of course, it is impossible to avoid stress in life. No matter how balanced you are, you will at some point experience stress because, well, that’s just life… We can however, focus on being resilient so that, when life knocks us over, we have the strength to bounce back quickly.
As your body is your ‘home’, the place your soul resides, it is of utmost importance you properly nourish it. We do this by eating right, resting well and using the right products for our skin. But which products are right for you? There are so many skin care products on the market that it is easy to buy things that aren’t suited for you. The first choice you can make to narrow your search down (and take the right path) is to choose organic, toxic-free skin care. This way you are sure that you are not using any aggressive chemical products that disrupt your skin’s natural barrier. Second, you need products that help strengthen that natural barrier and help your skin in properly fulfilling its tasks. This way your skin is less susceptible to having problems like acne or rosacea, better equipped to protect itself from sun damage and less likely to develop premature signs of aging.
Again, it is all about taking a holistic approach to life. Listening to what your body needs and not being afraid to act on that even if it means saying “no”. It’s okay to push yourself as great things can happen when you step out of your comfort zone. But always be aware of your boundaries, as your soul responds the same as your skin; when you don’t take enough time to strengthen, you’ll weaken your natural barrier and be more susceptible to having problems.
