Your precious skin is soft, beautiful and able to produce vitamin D from sunlight. It guards your muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs. It’s your barrier to the elements, the first line of defense, and protects your body against pathogens. In order to perform the important task of protecting, your skin needs to be healthy and balanced.
While we all spend plenty of time nourishing the skin of our face, neck and décolleté, we sometimes tend to neglect the skin of the rest of our body. That’s why today, I’d like to talk to you about the health benefits of dry skin brushing!
Start by finding a brush of excellent quality, made from materials that are natural. The bristles should be firm but not too hard. Most organic food stores that have a skin care department also sell suitable brushes. A brush with a long handle would be best as the handle allows you to reach your back.
The pressure you apply on the brush should be firm but brushing should never hurt or irritate your skin. After the session your skin should glow and look rosy, not red and irritated.
Try to add your brushing ritual to your daily body care regimen, like before you take a shower or a bath. Some people prefer to brush in the morning because they feel invigorated afterwards, but for some people it is really a more calming routine, suitable before taking a bath in the evening. Take as much time as you like but don’t overdo it as this will only irritate your skin. An average session will take about 5 to 15 minutes.
As the purpose of dry brushing is to assist your lymphatic system as well as blood circulation, you always brush towards your heart, starting at your feet. You can brush your whole body but it is recommended to use a softer brush for the genital area, your breasts, décolleté, neck and face as your skin is much more delicate in these areas. Also, areas of your body where the skin is irritated should be brushed with a softer brush or even avoided.
Many people experience an overall feeling of well-being when they add regular dry brushing into their daily skin care routine. Their skin feels soft and tight, it relaxes them and they feel connected to their body. Some people see their cellulite reducing and others say they feel fitter and are able to think more clearly.
Try it for yourself and find out what benefits regular brushing will bring you!
